Spinifex Hill Studio is the newest art centre in the Pilbara. Over 100 artists from eight language groups access these studios, home to the Spinifex Hill Artists, Hedland’s only Indigenous art collective.
The Spinifex Hill Studio have an extensive art collection, with new artworks being created every day. Visit www.spinifexhillstudio.com.au to see available artworks and follow on Instagram: @spinifexhillartists.
Among the artists are finalists and winners of major art awards, including the Paddington Art Prize, NATSIA Awards, Cossack Art Awards, and Hedland Art Awards. The collective’s work appears in local, national and international exhibitions.
Most of the Spinifex Hill artists paint in acrylics. The different styles, subjects and colour palettes of their artworks reflect the variety of Indigenous experience.
FORM started the Spinifex Hill Artists in 2008, moving into the Studios in 2014. An award winning FORM /BHP partnership supports the Studios, working with the artists to help build the Pilbara’s reputation as a powerful cultural and artistic region.
The Studios are an important cultural and community place for Hedland and the wider Pilbara. Many artists have been able to build esteem and pride through their art making, gain confidence to share stories in a culturally safe way, travel for exhibitions and art fairs, and create new income streams.
